NIC VAN DYKE MEETS A SINGER WITH
A TRULY DIVERSE BACKGROUND.
Sophie Koh is an exotic creature. She lives
in Melbourne, but was born in New
Zealand. Her mum and dad are from
Malaysia, but she grew up in Singapore
and NZ, before being "unearthed" in
Darwin. Her songs have been described as
enticing, cute, exotic and memorable and
she has a voice to adore. I caught up with
Sophie to celebrate the release of her debut
album All the Pretty Boys.
You've already supported some great
Aussie musos on tour. What have you
learned from them?
That these stars are people after all. They
are all not as rock and roll as they seem!
You were born in New Zealand, your mum
and dad are Malaysian, you grew up in
Singapore: is there anything from these
cultures you bring to your music?
Perhaps that it has opened up my ears to
all styles of music and to remain tolerant
to all kinds of music as they all have their
place and setting (pop, classical, hip hop,
ethnic music etc). In a sense, you start
learning from all these different styles.
Also, music always breaks the ice when
you meet someone new, whether or
they speak English or not. Particularly in
some developing nations I've been to,
you just have to pull out your guitar to
make a new friend.
What can we expect from a Sophie
Hopefully some good songs and a chat
What would you be doing if you weren't a
I would love to work in eye care in
developing nations and with aboriginal
communities in Australia.
Are there any musicians you'd one day like
to collaborate with?
Mr Neil Finn would be great.
Who are some of your favourite
songwriters and why?
Jeff Buckley, the Finn Brothers, Gillian
Welch, Aimee Mann -- they all write great
timeless songs and have an energy behind
them that doesn't come from hype or false
pretences, they are just good musicians
first and foremost.
What is success to you?
Who are some of your favourite artists?
Do I need to say Neil again? Also people
like Martha Wainwright, U2, Sheryl Crow,
Tori Amos, and the Beatles.
What came first, the singer or the
songwriter in you?
Although I never had any formal singing
lessons, I was always in school choirs and
humming along to things. Even my grade
2 report card said 'loves to sing'! e
