lotl.com • Lesbians On The Loose Magazine
25 Years! That’s 290 editions and 5 million copies
of “Lesbians On the Loose” printed since 1989. Did
we show the rest of Australia the meaning of lesbian
visibility? Yes, we did! And what a job well done,
thanks, largely to you!
THANK YOU, LOTL readers for being there—
we publish for YOU!
But we couldn’t publish without our advertis-
ers—advertisers that have been with LOTL for a
very long time.
Businesses such as: Andrea Wilson & Assoc.,
ACON, Christine Wilkinson & Julie Rea,
Cunningham Legal, City of Sydney, Figure It Out
Accounting, Jan Grant’s Counselling, Griffin Law-
yers, Lesbian Matchmaker, Pentimento, Serafim’s
Pharmacy, Specialised Ultrasound for Woman, SAX
Fetish, and Studio Ingot— to name just a few—have
been advertising with LOTL for over 15 years!
LOTL also depends on its many other regular
advertisers, such as: Acupet, Annandale Dental,
Annie Vidler, Crystal Creek Rainforest Resort,
Dracula’s Cabaret Melbourne, Cat Protection Soci-
ety, City East Community College, Dr Jennifer Flat,
Pearson Family Law, Gold Coast Tourism, Gaynor
Cobby Celebrant, Heart & Soul Celebration, Key
Assets, Kingfisher Bay Resort, Mioz, Madison’s
Mountain Retreat , Metropolitan Community
Church, Olivia Cruises, Queerscreen, Sue Pennicuik
MP, Shannon Maguire, Rainbow Finance Brokers,
Steiner Legal, Tropical Fruits, Trade Accounting,
Rent-a-Bomb, Myra Wedell, Rosara Squirchuk,
Rosanne Sinclair Celebrant, Vegie Bar, and Victoria
And let’s not forget the advertisers who joined
us in the last 12 months and introduced their busi-
nesses to our community. Thank you for investing
in us! And a special thank you to the LOTL readers
who choose to purchase the services and goods of
the businesses who support them.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all
the women (and, yes, some men!) who have worked
for LOTL—as employees and as volunteers—over
the years: editors, journalists, photographers, graphic
designers, advertising sales, business development,
subscriptions, web development, SEO, distribution,
events managers, and social media interns. While
working at LOTL brings a tonne of satisfaction, it’s
still business as usual and only hard work mixed with
love for LOTL delivers the results you hold in your
hands! Thank you, Jeannie, Bel, Ben, Tyson, Philip,
Amanda and Shaun!
After 25 years, it’s time to say thank you—and
goodbye! Goodbye to an old structure that has held
LOTL back. Because we have, after 25 years, hit the
glass ceiling. The current business structure cannot
reach more women, and has exhausted itself with
endless attempts at new ventures that get stuck by
being under-resourced and under-financed. It’s time
to let go and start afresh!
Therefore, I’d like to announce that I have decided
to hand LOTL over to the lesbian community of
Australia. The shareholders of Avalon Media and
myself have given up our ownership, truly believing
that the growth and immortality of LOTL is best
delivered with a not-for-profit structure: L Media! L
Media will comprise of a diverse range of women on
its new board, and guide LOTL into its next 25 years
My sincere thanks goes to the shareholders of
Avalon Media who have been supportive with this
decision and move. Thank you Joan, Megan, Valerie,
Kate, Zoe, and Sue!
My old friend and former LOTL editor—now
editor–in-chief of Curve magazine, Merryn Johns,
has interviewed me on page 12, where I share the
news and reasoning behind entering this phase of
My deepest gratitude, however, goes to my
partner and wife of 15 years, Tanya Elizabeth Sale.
She has been a boulder of strength and support that
has sustained me through and beyond my goals.
Well, would you like to celebrate with us and
look ahead to the next 25 years? Avalon Media and
L Media are putting on a party in February! You are
invited to celebrate this historic event in style.
To RSVP, please visit our Facebook page
or email Jeannie@lotl.com
(more details announced very shortly).
And now shall I leave you to read this
issue of LOTL, something you have been doing
for 25 years.Enjoy!
Congratulations LOTL readers!
You have achieved what no
other lesbian readership has: 25 years
of reading, enjoying, engaging with,
contributing to, and supporting a lesbian
monthly print magazine!
You have been there at the good and
difficult times—you adjusted to our shift
from print to digital, and supported our
advertisers and community groups
throughout the GFC—and we have come
out with a wider and more engaged
readership than LOTL has experienced
in a quarter of a century!
