or those of you who have never heard
of the Topp Twins, you’re in for a
real treat. And if you’ve never seen
them perform, you’ll get the chance
on Olivia Travel ’s Australia & New
Zealand Cruise Odyssey, taking place next
summer, 13 February to 24 February, 2015.
Identical twins and out lesbians, Lynda and
Jools Topp, have been performing as an original
comedy-music duo for more than 25 years. They
refined their craft by singing to the Huntly cows
and busking in Auckland. The Twins re-invent
themselves on stage, changing character, musical
style and gender with ease. They deliver original
songs and character comedy with their unique
trademark style of spontaneity and audience
participation (that’s right, they might embar-
rass you). Some of their most famous characters
include Camp Mother & Camp Leader, the
Gingham’s, and Ken & Ken, the latter for which
they dress as “typical Kiwi blokes.”
The Twins documentary feature film,
Untouchable Girls, released in April 2009, has
shown at 25 film festivals around the world. It
has won awards at the Toronto International
Film Festival, Melbourne International Film
Festival, Göteborg Internationa l Film Festi-
val, Portland International Film Festival and
the 2009 New Zealand Film and Television
Awards. It is currently New Zealand ’s highest
grossing documentary, with $2 million in box
office sales to date.
The New Zealand national treasures have
also had two of their own award-winning TV
series, Do Not Adjust Your Twinset and Topp
Country. They have even performed for Their
Royal Highnesses, Prince Charles and Lady
Camilla, in New Zealand.
In September 2008, with 11 records under
their belts, the twins were inducted into the
New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. This life-
time achievement award was presented to them
for songwriting, specifically for the impact their
songs and music have had on national culture.
I had the opportunity to reach out to the
Twins, who are busy amidst their Grand Ole
To p p ’ r y tour, about their upcoming perfor-
mance on Olivia Travel ’s Australia & New
Zealand Cruise Odyssey, their current projects
and their favourite places to travel.
You have performed with Olivia before so
how did it feel when they wanted to book you
to perform for the 25th anniversary of their
Topp Twins: It felt pretty good to be part of the
25th anniversary celebration. We had a ball
on the last cruise, and it feels special as it’s in
our neck of the woods this time. We’re looking
forward to performing and also showing off our
homeland to all the gals.
When did you first hear of Olivia Travel or
TT: We must’ve been in our 20s when we first
heard of Olivia Records; they were recording all
the big name lesbians.
What’s your favourite place to holiday/travel?
TT: We have had some amazing trips to USA
and Canada and love getting out into the wil-
derness in both those countries.
How do you feel to be performing for lesbians
from all over the world in your home turf?
TT: We can’t wait! We’ve written some new
songs, we ’re taking our characters on board,
and are excited to be able to perform on the
boat while passing through some of the most
beautiful waters in the Pacific.
Can you tell us a little bit about one of your
most memorable performances?
TT: They are all memorable. Each one has a spe-
cial moment that you can never re-create again.
If you could perform with anyone, who
would it be?
TT: Pink, she is so cool.
What projects are you working on now? Can
you tell us a little about your favourite one?
TT: We are currently on a national tour of New
Zealand with our country/comedy Show, The
Grand Ole Topp’r y...we love beingon the road.
Then we start filming our second series of Topp
Country in early 2015, a food show with a twist
– no one gets voted off!
What are you plans for the future?
TT: Be happy, keep working/playing, and riding
Is there anything else you wish we’d asked
you? Is there something else you would
like to say?
TT: We’re really proud of all the amazing work
that was done by the gay and lesbian communi-
ty to make gay marriage legal in New Zealand.
