THEY'RE ALL AUSSIE, ALL LESBIAN,
AND THEY'RE MAKING A BIG SPLASH
IN THE US. THE BLUEHOUSE ARE
BACK IN AUSTRALIA TO LAUNCH THEIR
NEW ALBUM THESE DAYS. NIC VAN
DYKE CAUGHT UP WITH THE
Besides good coffee, healthy food and
your loved ones, what did you miss about
Bern: I missed being able to speak quickly
and using slang without having to explain it;
that and meat pies!
Jacqui: I missed the entire footy season
including grand Final Barbie at my house! I
missed driving on the correct side of the
road and I missed my housemates the most!
Sam: I find there are less "extremes" here
like rich and poor, and I think that makes for
a happier place to live. And I missed our
What part of These Days are you most
Bern: The 'sound' that we've managed to
reproduce; it's basically our live stage
sound with only a few added extras. In the
past we've tried different things in the
studio, from electronic beats to grand piano,
which all added to the sound and I enjoyed
the end result.
It's been 3 years since your last album. How
have you grown as a band since then?
Bern: If anything, we're even closer friends.
We launched 6 Minutes of Breathable Air
around the time of September 11 and that
changed the way we looked at things,
and as a band we now have an even more
positive outlook for what is possible in the
future for the bluehouse, more determination
Jacqui: Well, my feet got bigger...I had to
buy new running shoes! We are all living in
different places now so when we come
together to tour it's like catching up with
your best mates and having fun. I think our
communication is the best it has ever been.
Sam: Musically, we have developed skills,
and grown in confidence. We started out
doing this as a hobby, and now it really is
something more than that!
What about on a personal level?
Bern: I have the best job in the world and
am enjoying singing and playing like never
before. All the experiences over the past few
years have rekindled the excitement about
what I do and my belief in it.
Jacqui: I am in the place where I just
enjoy what every day brings. I feel I am
creating exactly what it is that I've
always envisioned. Added to this I have a
beautiful and together partner who is
also a Texan (y'all)!
Sam: Life just gets better and better!
How do you feel before a show when
you're launching new material?
Bern: Nervous. Very nervous. Playing the
new songs in a studio is soooooo different to
playing live. At the same time, I'm also
excited because the songs always feel so
much more in front of an audience...it's a
hard feeling to explain...a bit like pleasure
and pain, pins and needles...
In the album sleeve you thank fans
& friends for many things, including
their advice. What is best advice
Jacqui: Look left, look right, look left
again... (Doesn't apply in America!)
Seriously, Life's a game, as soon as
you start taking it too seriously you've
Sam: Go to the toilet before you go on
These Days features a great cover of Only
Yo u by Yazoo. Why did you choose this?
Sam: This is the first song that we played
together EVER and at the same time it was
to an audience...and I will always remember
that first song!
Do you think your performances have
changed after spending so much time in a
Bern: We played a lot of 'listening rooms'
which meant that the audience was really
quiet and gave the music their full attention.
That kind of respect for me as a musician
encouraged me to perform in a way that was
respectful to the listener.
Jacqui: I think we had to be less crude
because Americans are generally more
conservative than Australians and some of
our shows have been smack bang in the
middle of the Bible belt. Hopefully we have
become a little more 'professional' in our
performance style...practicing for those
massive arena shows!
You've included an enhanced computer feature
on the new album.
Jacqui: The enhanced CD was a fun way to
get more things. We have limited room on
the CD artwork so we have put the lyrics on
the enhanced feature as well as photos and
bonus mp3 tracks...lots of fun! e
