TIME AND MOTHERHOOD HAVE
MELLOWED SANDRA BERNHARD.
BUT AS MERRYN JOHNS FINDS
OUT, THIS BIG-LIPPED LEGEND STILL
Back when lipstick lesbianism was just
beginning to be hip, an Amazonian
American comedian burst into popular
consciousness as Roseanne's friend,
Madonna's best friend -- but to most -- one
bitchy lady. In fact, bitching was what she
did best. Politicians, super models, rock
stars, actresses, lesbians -- no one was
spared her lip. But behind the bitching, or
critiquing, as academics preferred to call it,
was an obsession with being famous.
Eventually, Bernhard's arresting
appearance and raw talent made her so.
First noticed as the crazed female fan in
Martin Scorsese's King of Comedy, she
went on to appear in many films and TV
shows. Her live monologues garnered
her an international cult following, and this
month she tours Australia in An Evening
with Sandra Bernhard.
Sandra Bernhard: Hello. Are you on
Merryn Johns: Well, for you...I once
flew to New York to see you.
SB:Well, this time I'll do the travelling.
It's been ten years since I've been Down
Under -- it's nuts.
MJ: We're getting desperate.
SB: Good! [Laughs]
MJ: How was your last trip here?
SB: Everyone was enthusiastic...You make
that big effort to come to Australia and
people really appreciate it.
MJ: You survived the US election?
SB: It was just awful. We were devastated.
It was like being in mourning for a week.
MJ: What effect has the US political
climate had on your material?
SB: I started talking about 9/11 three
weeks after it happened and I immediately
said it was just a diversion to the fact that
George Bush stole the election the first
time. cont.It was a very fortuitous thing for
him. He's a cynical bastard. I don't think
he cares a fuck about the average person in
It is essential, as a
part of gay culture,
to see me and
respect me and
come and pay
homage to me.
