Belinda Hazelton previews
some of the best lesbian films
in Queerscreen's film festival.
"For me, Mardi Gras will
always encapsulate a sense
of belonging, inclusion and
acceptance. Not to mention
excitement, gorgeous women
and hot, sweaty bodies!"
Nic Van Dyke gets up
close and personal with the
bluehouse and Dikes on
Mikes. "'Tis the season to
be jolly. Mardi Gras is my
alternative Christmas. A time
to get together with my
'other' family and celebrate
our love for ourselves."
Kylie Cochrane gets hot
and bothered over this Mardi
Gras' lesbian sporting
events. "Mardi Gras means
to me affirmation, dancing
with my gal, fun, sore feet
and more SPORT!"
Fiora Sacco was the happy
snapper of our Mardi Gras
party-wear models. "Mardi
means to me community,
celebration, a great time to
party and enjoy so many
interesting people and events.
It's the best month of the
year. Happy Mardi Gras!"

This is my fifth Mardi Gras from the perspective of LOTL editor and from where I sit,
things have gone from looking fairly bleak for the community's most well-known
organisation, to a year of strength, unity and brightness. Congratulations to Steph Sands,
Mark Orr and their team for bringing us a remarkable season full of lesbian-oriented
events. This month we hear from some extraordinary women: from international performer
Sandra Bernhard to the dedicated female volunteers who have been working hard behind
the scenes this Mardi Gras.
It's been a lot of fun putting together the bumper edition of our Girls Guide to the Mardi
Gras Festival (do you love our new look or what?). And to help you navigate the season
we have a souvenir Festival planner which lists as many events as we could manage. And
to get you in the mood for the Party we have a poster reflecting the theme of the girls
space which returns this year. Happy Mardi Gras!
Editor s Letter
Katrina Fox -- rounds up
the girls' sexy events in the
Festival. "Mardi Gras to me
means a celebration of
sexual diversity and the
chance to frock up and
agitate in heels and glitter."
Jackie Braw -- writes on
lesbian health initiatives this
Mardi Gras. "Mardi Gras
makes we want to tell the
love. And whilst I enjoy the
Parade and a good party,
it's Fair Day I look forward
to most, where we all
come together as one big
I asked some of our key contributors this month to describe
what Mardi Gras season means to them. Here are their replies.
